KAONASHI:

Kaonashi or “No-face” is a spirit and a secondary antagonist in the Studio Ghibli animation film “Spirited Away”, the masterpiece by Hayao Miyazaki. No-Face is depicted as a black shadow with a white, glazed-over mask. He is shown to be capable of reacting to emotions and ingesting other individuals in order to gain their personality and physical traits. Then he turns into a huge monster.

He’s a spirit capable of producing wealth, through which he tries to fill his emotional needs of love, friendship and kindness, deceiving himself to be able to buy them giving away gold, with no success.

This character is rich of different facets: No-Face is not a villain, the spirit is somewhere in-between. In fact he raises in the audience a sense of tenderness due to his shyness, solitude and to his clumsy attempt to give and to get love from his neighbor, without succeeding.

This is a metaphor of modern societies, where the richest countries try to grab in any way material wealth, without this resulting in any kind of inner wealth.

The story of No-Face lends itself to many different interpretations. It represents the modern concept according to which, money can buy anything, even feelings.

Moreover, it is considered an allegory of contemporary Japan: a country left without a face after World War II, a country that put aside its traditions and its imperial glorious past, to make way to something new. Japanese people, known for their xenophilia, absorbed anything coming from abroad, taking on the appearance of what had been absorbed, losing their own identity and therefore becoming hideous.
